How To Keep A Healthy New Year Going
Although the holidays are officially over, Winter is just getting started! It's still that time of the year where new beginnings and fresh starts await. We're all for giving into those cravings, but we can't forget to provide our health with the support it needs. Perhaps that also means accomplishing those 2022 goals you had in mind.
Every year many of us plan out huge resolutions. Whether that means setting health goals, such as dieting or exercising, or planning out financial objectives. More times than not they're so big it makes it difficult to actually stick to them. Our 4 New Year's resolutions are so simple and healthy, but most importantly they're easy for anyone to accomplish in the new year!
Let's break the cycle of big goals and start small! It's important for us to share goals that can not only improve ones overall wellbeing but are attainable to use through out a lifetime.
1.) Keep your body movin', movin'!
Whether we're at work, home, or all of the above, many people find themselves sitting more than they should. Sitting down a lot isn't the best for our health, but did you know it has actually been linked to negative health effects. Researchers found that sitting often can increase the risk of overall mortality. In a novel analysis of over 200,000 adults, they examined the effects of substituting one behavior for the other, and found that when participants switched sitting for standing they showed a 3% decrease in this risk of mortality. The association of standing with mortality was even more significant when participants completely replaced sitting for standing with a 5% decrease in risk for each hour.
There's no need to over commit to an intense workout routine or daily regimen, simply replacing an hour of sitting for standing or even taking a 10 minute walk can allow you to easily start taking the steps towards continuing the healthy new year.
So what are we getting at? Start small! Not only do these little habits add up but they keep your body moving in an attainable manner.
2.) Strengthen your immune system.
In order to build a strong immune system our bodies need optimal diet and nutrition. Having a cheat meal here and there won't have a big effect, but continuously feeding our body with unhealthy foods will not provide the support the we need in order to fight against harmful pathogens. Let's dive into the details behind the immune system and how you can naturally strengthen it.
The immune system protects the body from harmful pathogens, fighting off intruders such as bacteria and viruses. It's your bodies first, second, and third line of defense. Reliant on the bodies cells, organs and signaling pathways, the immune system depends on these functioning properly.
Proper diet and nutrition is key when it comes to a well functioning immune system. Evidence has shown that undernutrition weakens immune defences at all stages of the life cycle, making one more prone to infection. From proteins to micronutrients, decencies in nutrition can lead to an impaired immune system, leaving one susceptible against threatening pathogens.
Micronutrients such as magnesium, calcium, and potassium assist with the regulation of the immune system. These minerals play an important role in protecting against infections. Not sure you're getting enough micronutrients? Incorporating electrolytes or mineral rich supplements into your diet can easily help strengthen your immune system. 3.) Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!
Although the months ahead are becoming colder, many tend to think dehydration only occurs during the warmer seasons. Dehydration during Winter actually carries the same risk as it would during Summer. A study conducted by the department of Kinesiology at the University of New Hampshire, found that the cold diminishes thirst by up to 40 percent.
Researchers discovered that this occurs during Winter due to the process of vascular constriction which leads to a decline in thirst. This process essentially prevents blood flow due to your blood vessels being constricted in the cold.

4.) Be in the moment!
We often find ourselves planning goals a month, year, or even a decade in advance, but many forget to focus on the present. Evidence suggests that when people are more present in life it may improve overall satisfaction by decreasing negative thoughts.
Being mindful and in the moment may help those feel more content in their everyday life. So take that 5 minute break, wake up in the morning without immediately looking at your phone, stop and notice your environment. Being conscious of our own time and listening to others are simple tactics you can implement to be more present.
We hope one of the above tips helps you and others start to break the cycle, by switching out big goals for attainable ones! There's no need for extravagant planning, even though we'll always want more, it's easier to start small and go from there!
