Festive Gingerbread Cookies made with blk. Drops
The holiday season is all about giving and we want to share blk.’s FAVORITE gingerbread cookie recipe with you! A team member of ours used to make these with their Grandma growing up. The addition of blk. gives the cookies an interesting and unique color like you’ve never seen. Enjoy this modern take on a comforting holiday classic!
Do you remember going over to your Grandma’s house during the holidays, the comforting smells of sweet holiday treats wafting through the air, beckoning you into her antique-filled living room?
When we think of the holidays, we imagine gingerbread houses and the sweet gingerbread people that fill them. We recommend using gum drops and nerds, any type of candy really, to make the silliest faces. Sometimes red and black licorice can become curly hair, or a bunch of pink sprinkles curved up into a gingerbread woman’s smile! Maybe one gingerbread man can be an old cranky sailor… another could be a mechanic. A teacher! A ballerina! The possibilities are endless, but one thing is always consistent: the delicious spices and molasses flavor that brings a smile to everyone’s faces.
During the “sweet” season it’s also good to consider how many sugary sweets we intake, and how to offset some of the rich foods of the holidays to avoid feeling fatigue. One way we like to do that is by adding blk. water’s mineral-packed drops to our holiday drinks and dishes. blk. Drops improve gut health, reduce inflammation, strengthen hair, skin, & nails, boost antioxidants, and even help the body to fight against fatigue -- something we could ALL use this time of year! It gets so exhausting between the shopping, the cooking, the dealing with family. Anything we can give our bodies to preemptively strengthen our immune system for the stress of the holidays is a necessity! Let us show you how we incorporate these healthy drops into a classic family recipe.
Here are the ingredients you will need:
INGREDIENTS
• 10 Tbsp unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
• ¾ cup of brown sugar (light or dark brown sugar works!)
• ⅔ cup molasses
• 1 egg
• 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
• 1 tsp blk. Drops
• 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
• 1 tsp baking soda
• ½ tsp salt
• 1 Tbsp ground ginger
• 1 Tbsp ground cinnamon
• ½ tsp ground allspice
• ½ tsp ground cloves
Optional: Icing and your favorite candies for decorating!
INSTRUCTIONS
1.) In a large bowl (We suggest using a hand-held mixer or stand mixer), beat the butter for 1 minute on medium speed until smooth and creamy. Next add the brown sugar and molasses and beat on med-high speed until combined. Next, beat in egg, vanilla, and blk. Drops on high speed for 2 minutes. Scrape down the sides of the bowl if needed. The butter may separate; don’t worry about that!
2.) In a separate bowl, whisk the flour, baking soda, salt, ginger, cinnamon, allspice, and cloves together until combined. On low speed, slowly mix into the wet ingredients until combined. The cookie dough should be thick and sticky. Divide your dough in half and place each onto a large piece of plastic wrap. Wrap each up tightly and pat down to create a disc shape. Chill discs for at least 3 hours and up to 3 days. Chilling is mandatory for this cookie dough. I always chill mine overnight.
3.) Preheat the oven to 350°F (177°C). Line 2-3 large baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats. Set aside.
4.) Remove 1 disc of chilled cookie dough from your refrigerator. Sprinkle a good amount of flour onto your work surface, and your rolling pin. Pat some flour onto your hands as well. I promise this helps! The dough will be very sticky - so the more flour you use, the easier it will be to work with! Roll out the disc until 1/4-inch thick. Cut into shapes. Place shapes 1 inch apart on prepared baking sheets. Re-roll dough scraps until all the dough is shaped. Repeat with the remaining disc of dough.
5.) Bake the cookies for about 8-10 minutes at 350 degrees. For an even bake, be sure to rotate the pan once during bake time.
6.) Allow cookies to cool for 5 minutes on the cookie sheet. Transfer to cooling rack to cool completely. Once they are completely cool, start decorating with your icing and candies!
7.) To store your cookies - leave them covered at room temperature! They will stay soft and delicious for up to 1 week.
And there you have it! The perfect holiday treat to make and enjoy with your loved ones. From everyone at blk. - we hope these cookies bring a smile to your face and complete your holiday dessert spread!
